Nepal Water Conservation Foundation


Resource Centre

NWCF maintains a well-equipped resource managed by trained librarian. The centre has a repository of about 5000 books and gray literature on resource management and water issues. It also has a substantial collection of maps, atlas, pictures, video, newspaper clipping, and brochures. The materials have been catalogued and computerized for easy and quick access. It is open to all including researchers from universities and academic institution colleges, local groups and other institutions. A brief description about the subjects and types of materials is as follows.

Books and Reports: The books and reports have been catalogued according to their subjects as following.

  • Power
  • Covers range of subjects including Large, medium, and small hydro projects, photovoltaic and nuclear power plants, and institutional and policy related books and reports

  • Irrigation
  • Covers systems and related issues of hills, mountains, and Tarai irrigation, technology and methods such as surface, and lift, institutional dimension and policy, technical designs, economics and finance etc

  • Water supply
  • Domestic water supply in rural as well as urban areas, their design, policy and institutions, and governance aspects are covered in our collection.

  • River/Basin
  • The centre has the largest collection of materials covering issues on river basins and development. They have been catalogued according to the river basins within Nepal such as Kosi, Gandaki, Karnali, Mahakali, and Bagmati, and those in the region such as Ganga basin covering India, Nepal and Bangladesh, Bharhamaputra Basin of India and Bangaladesh and some other river basins of India, US, Europe, and others.

  • Energy
  • The collection in energy included books, reports, and papers on both conventional and alternate sources of energy. The topic covered under this heading include biogas, fossil fuel, fire-wood, economic and financial aspect of energy, institutional dimension, and policy related literature including acts and rules, regulations.

  • Technology
  • The materials included technical and book rich in philosophy and social dimension of technology.

  • Communication
  • Books on telecommunication and media including print and electronic dominate our collection. NWCF has been able to collect large number of newspaper clippings on news and articles on water and water resource development dating back to 1965.

  • Earth Sciences
  • The books under this heading are mainly from core science such as meteorology, hydrology, geology, geophysics (Earthquakes), and glaciology

  • Development
  • The material under this heading covers wide range of issues of development in rural and urban, hills and plains, national and international, regional and global context.

  • Environment
  • The collection of materials on environment and development includes issues such a deforestation, wetland and water quality.

  • Land Management.
  • The documents include recent printed materials on land management such forestry, horticulture, livestock, agriculture and wetland.

  • Social Science
  • NWCF began its research with the understudying that social aspect is the underlying factor in development. We have generated of our own as well as collected material on social science and development. The books included those on philosophy, anthropology, political, sociology and law.

  • Disaster
  • NWCF has rich materials on disasters issues including floods, earthquake, fire, landslide and drought.

Maps and Atlas: NWCF resource centre has collection of maps and atlas related to water and natural resources for reference. Recent maps on land-use, drainage, and infrastructure of major basins of Nepal are available.

In addition, it has collection of workshop materials/presentations/posters and newsletters along with newspaper clippings from different local magazines. NWCF has also made two documentaries on local water management and floods.
